Now a growing number of scientists believe that these hobbits are probably the direct descendants of some of the  first  ape-men &#8212; such as the famous &#8220;Lucy&#8221; &#8212; to evolve on the African savannah three million years ago.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/homo-floresiensis-hobbit_skull.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2307 alignleft\" title=\"homo-floresiensis-hobbit_skull\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/homo-floresiensis-hobbit_skull-300x168.jpg?resize=300%2C168\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/homo-floresiensis-hobbit_skull.jpg?resize=300%2C168&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/homo-floresiensis-hobbit_skull.jpg?w=525&amp;ssl=1 525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Earlier this month, researchers presented work at the annual meeting of  the American Association of Physical Anthropologists, in Chicago,  suggesting that <em>Homo floresiensis<\/em> may have left Africa a full  million years earlier than any other hominids were thought to have  ventured out from the home continent.<\/p>\n<p>That would mean that these the diminutive hominids, not <em>Homo erectus<\/em>, were the first to migrate from Africa, eventually traveling half a world from their probable  birthplace in the Rift Valley to make their homes among the orangutans,  giant turtles and rare birds of Indonesia.
