While it is most famous for being the home of Highclere Castle, it is also the address of the Highclere Church, which was the alleged habitat of one of the strangest cryptids ever recorded.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/england-highclere-church.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5586\" title=\"england-highclere-church\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/england-highclere-church-300x211.jpg?resize=300%2C211\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a>While there&#8217;s not much of a written record concerning this unique beast, what has been passed down through the centuries are eyewitness accounts of a strange, wheezing animal that was said to resemble &#8212; at least on the surface &#8212; a dolphin or porpoise. What\u2019s even more odd is that, unlike its ostensibly marine mammalian kin, the Grampus was said to dwell in the branches of an ancient yew tree located in the Highclere Churchyard.<\/p>\n<p>While the Grampus was not considered to be a particularly dangerous vermin, it did manage to terrify locals by emitting a disturbing cacophony of guttural noises and, even more alarmingly, chasing anyone \u2013 primarily, it would seem, young women &#8212; foolish enough to wander too close to its domicile. What method of locomotion it used to propel itself in these pursuits remains a mystery.<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say the Highclere natives believes this bizarre beast to be a denizen of the hell, and they promptly enjoined a local clergyman to help rid them of what they perceived to be a demonic entity. The anonymous clergyman agreed and through the rite of exorcism &#8212; by means of bell book and candle &#8212; managed to banish the beast into the Red Sea for a period of no less than 1,000 years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/columba1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5591\" title=\"columba1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/columba1-300x169.jpg?resize=300%2C169\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/columba1.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/columba1.jpg?w=420&amp;ssl=1 420w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>To anyone familiar LAKE MONSTER lore this story is amazingly similar to that of famed Christian missionary, St. Columba. On August 22, 565 A.D., St. Columba was said to have prevented the LOCH NESS MONSTER from devouring one of his acolytes through the use of prayer.<\/p>\n<p>While there can be little doubt that the tale of St. Columba banishing the monster smacks of early Christian dogma, many researchers are now convinced that the core of the story is based on an actual encounter with one of Nessie&#8217;s ancestors. Perhaps the same holds true of the Grampus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/orca_penguin_feast.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5597\" title=\"orca_penguin_feast\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/orca_penguin_feast-300x194.jpg?resize=300%2C194\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a>The Grampus was also said to have a tendency toward heavy breathing or &#8220;blowing like a whale.&#8221; This may account for the creature\u2019s name. In the 1893 opus; \u201cA Journal of natural philosophy, chemistry and the arts, Volume 21,\u201d author William Nicholson refers to the predatory orca or killer whales as \u201cgrampus.\u201d Others have even suggested that the old expression &#8220;puffing like a Grampus,&#8221; was inspired by the beast.<\/p>\n<p>One of the few printed references to the Grampus was published in 1890, in Andrew Lang\u2019s \u201cLife, Letters, and Diaries of Sir Stafford Northcote &#8212; First Earl of Iddesleigh.\u201d Northcote, who lived between 1818 and 1887, was a British Conservative politician and lover of tales of the paranormal. He chronicled a short passage about the Grampus \u2013 which he refers to as a \u201cGrumpus\u201d \u2013 in his diary:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/grampus_yew.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5603\" title=\"grampus_yew\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/grampus_yew-211x300.jpg?resize=211%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>&#8220;A few days in autumn he spent in Highclere. His shooting &#8216;was excerable,&#8217; but he was consoled with an evening of ghost stories.\u00a0 &#8216;Mrs &#8212;- had the advantage of us in having seen a ghost.&#8217; He expected a visit from Grumpus, the Highclere bogy, who, it is true, had been laid in the red sea for 100 years, but his time there was now nearly expired.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While this brief account does not contain any new information on the Grampus, what it may help to illuminate is what period of time the beast actually lurked in the yew tree in the Highclere Churchyard.<\/p>\n<p>Northcote indicated that this fiend\u2019s banishment lasted merely 100-years \u2013 which may be a typo \u2013 but most accounts agree that this beast was cast out for no less than millennia. Assuming that the 1,000 year exile is accurate, that would place the Grampus\u2019s tenure in the yew tree in Hampshire County at somewhere in the order of the late 9th century A.D.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/shachihoko.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5601\" title=\"shachihoko\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/shachihoko-257x300.jpg?resize=257%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"257\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/shachihoko.jpg?resize=257%2C300&amp;ssl=1 257w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/shachihoko.jpg?resize=360%2C420&amp;ssl=1 360w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cryptopia.us\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/shachihoko.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/><\/a>In Japan Grampus is a common alternative way of describing a killer whale. The kanji character for grampus can be interpreted in two ways; one reading is \u201cshachi,\u201d which is the Japanese for grampus.<\/p>\n<p>The other interpretation is \u201cSHACHIHOKO,\u201d which represents a monster with the head of a tiger and the tail of a carp. A gold-plated pair of these beasts adorns the top of Nagoya Castle in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever this <a href=\"WEB\" target=\"_\">UNCLASSIFIED<\/a> creature was, there seems to be nothing quite like it in either the annals of zoology or cryptozoology.
