The Point Pleasant Register has reported that the annual Mothman Festival is slated to take place on Sept.17 and 18  in order to to celebrate Point Pleasant’s own mysterious legend, the Mothman.

The legend of the MOTHMAN began on November 12, 1966, when citizens of the town of Point Pleasant West Virginia claim that they were being stalked by a winged, humanoid AVIAN ANOMALY. This flap of sightings lasted for over a year until December 15, 1967, when the Silver Bridge collapsed, tragically claiming 46 lives.

The furor surrounding these mysterious events have resulted in a bestselling book, a hit movie and a legend that now defines this small community. It is this terrifying and ultimately sorrowful string of events that citizens of Point Pleasant have chosen to transform into a celebration of their town’s unique history.

The 2010 Miss Mothman Festival Pageant is slated to kick off this year’s festival at the Point Pleasant Riverfront Park. On Saturday, festival-goers will have the opportunity to meet with the original Mothman eyewitnesses and listen to keynote speakers.

On Saturday evening, the popular TNT Hayride will take place. The hayrides will start just outside of the TNT area, where the original Mothman sightings took place. Those who take part in the hayrides will be treated to live music and refreshments. The Mothman Museum will also be open during the festival.
